Track daily processed food, not just one barcode
One scan is a snapshot. A daily processed score shows how processed the whole day has been. Gut Score tracks both — plus kcal — as you log meals.
Most barcode apps stop at the product in your hand. That is useful in the aisle and incomplete by evening. A Low-score breakfast does not cancel a Very high afternoon. A single “fine” yogurt says nothing about the rest of the trolley. If you want to eat less ultra-processed food, you need a number for the day, not only a number for one pack.
Why one barcode lies by omission
Processing stacks. Three Medium snacks and a Very high dinner can feel like “I mostly ate okay” if you only remember the best scan. The reverse is also true: one Very high treat on an otherwise Low day is a different story from a day built entirely on industrial snacks. Without a daily processed score, memory edits the evidence.
- Aisle decisions are local. You compare two packs and move on.
- Eating is cumulative. The day is the unit that actually changes how you feel.
- Kcal alone will not catch a day of ultra-processed food that still “fits” your energy budget.
What a daily processed score is
Gut Score tracks the day. Each time you scan and log a meal, the item’s processed score and kcal join today’s totals. You still see Low, Medium, High, or Very high on the pack in front of you. You also see how processed everything you have logged has been so far — one running score for the day, next to today’s kcal.
That is the difference between a lookup tool and a habit tool. Lookup answers “what is this?” Habit answers “what has today been?” Gut Score does both.
How to use it without turning dinner into homework
- Scan when you are unsure. You do not need to log water or a banana to get value from the day score.
- Log the meals that actually vary: breakfast bars, supermarket lunches, evening snacks.
- Look at the daily processed score before a second snack, not only after you already ate it.
- Use Very high as information. Sometimes you still eat it. The day score keeps the rest of the day honest.
Processed score and kcal together
Energy and processing move independently. A Low-score bowl of oats can be a large kcal item. A Very high sweet can be small. Gut Score shows kcal on the scan and a running total for the day, beside the daily processed score, so you are not forced to pick one lens. If you want the scale itself explained, read what a processed food score is.
If you have been scanning packs in a health-score app and still losing the thread by 9pm, switch the unit of attention from the barcode to the day. Gut Score is the best app for finding processed foods because it keeps that day in view — scan, score, kcal, log, repeat.
